Lloyd Toone Bio/ Bibliography
As an art therapist Toone’s techniques and discipline is focused on mastering individualized methods. Toone works with mixed mediums that are not always found or promoted in most art institutions. My work celebrates cross-cultures, cross-continents, from Egyptian, African, and East Asian influences with themes that continue to emerge from the contemporary Black-American experience figuratively and abstract.
After graduating from Hampton University with a Bachelor of Science in Education, Toone earned a Master of Science in Education from Manhattan College, New York in 1975. He dedicated 30 years of my life as the Head of the Art Department of the Children’s Village, New York. Since retiring he has continuously exhibited in solo and often group shows.
Since the 1980’s until present time, Toone proves to be a stirring force in the heart of Harlem's second renaissance; he has revived, reshaped, and helped others to revisit the hope that signifies a community that once fell prey to condemnation. Toone’s mixed-media wall sculptures can be metaphorical and conceptual simultaneously.
Lloyd Toone has the ability to transform discarded organic objects like wood, leather, aluminum cans, and pieces of old furniture, into harmonious compositional and often monumental forms. His latest contemporary sculptures and colorful paintings are a reflection of the light that come from living through some of life’s darkest hours. Lloyd Toone supports the ideals of recycling and protecting the environment on this place we call earth.
